All About Henna: Insights & Care
What is Henna?
Henna, also known as mehndi, is a natural plant-based dye made from the leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant. Used for centuries in South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, henna is traditionally applied to the skin in intricate patterns for celebrations, weddings, and festivals. When applied, henna leaves behind a reddish-brown stain that fades naturally over 1–3 weeks.
Before Your Henna Appointment
- Shave or wax at least 24–48 hours before your appointment. Avoid doing it the same day.
- Do not apply lotions, oils, or creams on the area where henna will be applied.
- Wear comfortable, loose clothing that allows easy access to the area being decorated.
- Drink water and eat something light—relaxing helps with stillness and better results.
Aftercare Tips
- Leave the paste on for 4–8 hours (or overnight if possible) for the darkest stain.
- Scrape off dried henna—do not wash with water immediately.
- Apply lemon-sugar mixture or sealant to keep the paste moist (if provided).
- Avoid water, soap, and sweat for the first 12–24 hours after removing the paste.
- The stain will darken over 48 hours—expect a peak rich brown or maroon shade.
How Long Does Henna Last?
The stain typically lasts 7–14 days depending on skin type, care, and placement. Hands and feet tend to stain darkest and last longest, while other areas may fade sooner. Gentle care can help preserve the design.
Is Henna Safe?
Natural henna is generally safe and non-toxic. At Hennani Art, we only use 100% natural, fresh henna with no additives or harmful chemicals. We never use "black henna," which can contain dangerous substances like PPD.
